FIVE FREE PR tools you can implement now in your business

If you have a bit of time and inclination, there are five things you can do now to start generating your own PR, and they're all free! All they'll cost you is your time.

1. Build a media list

Do you know which publications your customers are reading? If you do, it's really easy to find out editorial contacts. Simply Google the publication to identify relevant journalists, or use a free tool like Once you have a media list, you can start sending relevant content to the people writing about your industry.

2. Follow relevant journalists and publications on Twitter.

Lots of journalists use Twitter to put out requests for case studies and content for stories. Respond quickly to a relevant request and you could be on your way to getting featured in a publication read by your customers.

3. Make sure you have press office contacts easily visible on your website

I've lost count of the number of journalists who regularly tweet big brands asking how they can get hold of the PR. If a journalist wants to talk to you, they'll go to your website to find the press office contact details. Make sure they can find them.

4. Follow the Twitter hashtag #journorequests

Respond to any journalist requests that you can help with and that are relevant to your industry.

5. Shout about any press coverage you get

Once you have been featured in a publication, either online or offline, be sure to shout about your success on your social media channels, your website and your e-newsletter. Editorial is as powerful as strong customer testimonials, so make sure you use it.
